February 13, 2009 - Bold as brass

I took Rory for a little work in the arena last night. Walk and trot (he cantered a few times too). We went over poles and around jumps. We turned left and right and backed up. We stopped with his front and back feet on either side of a pole. He was a little distracted at times whinnying for TOW. Other times he got full of himself and tossed his head and bounced and even reared. When one of the horses cantered by he tried to bolt in the other direction, but the next time I made him stand still and watch. He took one nip at me and I gave him what for - he didn't try THAT again! He hopped over a cavaletti several times quite happily. He did get a little lazy and smacked his front toes on it once - the next time he was clear.

He pooped four times (looks like he inherited mum's nervous poops) and was relatively well behaved as I scooped them up. I'm hoping that he'll learn that going out and doing stuff is no big deal and get over the nervous pooping.

If he'd been an adult horse I'd have said he was bad, but even though he got distracted he was also paying attention to me and moved when I told him to, where I pointed him. Pretty good for our first time out with working horses.

At the end I let him go and see the big horse that had been cantering. Little so-and-so sniffed noses and then tossed his head - twice! No baby mouthing at all!
