June 1, 2009 – Joining the big herd

On Saturday I attempted to introduce him to ponying off my QH. My QH wasn't keen on the idea at all and made faces and sidled away from Rory. Rory just stood very still watching the big horse's antics with wide eyes, not daring to move. I gave up and put Rory back out, then took my QH for a refresher ride, after which I borrowed someone else's horse to pony for a few minutes. I think he's just feeling old and grumpy and doesn't want to deal with ill-mannered little babies bumping him. It has been nine years since he had to allow the brat to pony along. Too bad for him ponying babies is one of his jobs.
Later on the turnout groups got shuffled and Rory and TOW went out in the front field (the brat's herd, though he's still on solo turnout). Naturally it was the biggest horse (17.3? 18?) who went over to see them. The almost yearlings saw him coming and ran. They have talked to him through the fence before, but it's a little different when there's no fence in the way. In the end Rory's mum ended up in a different field. Rory whinnied when he saw her go and ran up to the gate. Then he turned around and went a few steps away before turning back to the gate and cantered. He dropped his head and sized it up... and decided not to jump.

The almost yearlings are stuck together, at times with TOW's mum but mostly on their own. They move when any other horse looks at them, and go and find an unoccupied haybale. I did see them sharing a bale with the two year old and a three year old. There's some grass to nibble and space for them to run.
